This year’s High School Giving Circle was charged with learning about and practicing “transformative philanthropy”—supporting organizations that work to help clients’ change their lives rather than solve an immediate crisis. Working as a group, they chose priorities for their giving, including a strong focus on youth, community health, and human services.
The students researched more than 40 local nonprofits, interviewed 12 and made awards to:
- Casa de Vida
- Communities in Schools of Western Nevada
- Northern Nevada HOPES
- Awaken
- Domestic Violence Resource Center (formerly CAAW)
- Community Services Agency
The Giving Circle met after school on Thursdays at the Community Foundation office for ten weeks. A cross-section of our community was represented in the students from Hug, Reno, Reed, Sage Ridge, Manogue and Davidson high schools. The diversity of their interests and awareness of community issues spoke to the high level of community involvement and leadership displayed by the students.
The money for the High School Giving Circle grants was given to the Circle by a generous fundholder. Students leave the High School Giving Circle experiencing the power of philanthropy to make a positive difference. They explore their values and articulate their hopes for our community. We believe this knowledge will motivate generosity and community involvement throughout their lives.
