Empowering Change: Highlights from the 2023 High School Giving Circle
As the 2023 High School Giving Circle concludes, we reflect on a semester packed with practical learning and impactful decisions. 24 teens from various high schools in northern Nevada dedicated 10 weeks to exploring the world of philanthropy, showing that anyone in our community can make a lasting impact.
Funded annually by an anonymous donor, the High School Giving Circle allocates $10,000 to local nonprofits. Throughout the program, teens engaged in practical activities such as learning to read 990s, interviewing local nonprofits, and using resources like Truckee Meadows Tomorrow's website to understand the most pressing needs in our community.
Their focus on supporting organizations within the education, women's rights, mental health, and public health sectors showcased a commitment to maximizing the impact of their grants. After thoughtful consideration, the High School Giving Circle awarded grants to five deserving organizations: Project 150, Trauma Intervention Program, Nevada Youth Empowerment Project, Solace Tree, and Community Health Alliance.
The success of the 2023 High School Giving Circle lies in its demonstration of the power of collaborative philanthropy. Driven by a shared vision for a better northern Nevada, these young leaders showcased that everyone in our community can make a meaningful and lasting difference. One participant noted, "I really liked seeing some of the more unique nonprofits that focus on problems that have never occurred to me might be happening. Seeing multiple nonprofits and all their perspectives on helping the community was very cool." With these young leaders paving the way for positive change, the future looks brighter for our communities.
