I’d like to give special recognition to this year’s grantees and share with you the projects and programs that the Community Fund is helping to support. Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada - St. Vincent’s Warming Room This grant will provide a warming center for the area’s homeless during freezing winter mornings, potentially providing a life-saving service to Reno’s rapidly increasing homeless population, who are at great risk of hypothermia and complications from the cold. Child Assault Prevention - Elementary Child Abuse Prevention Workshops These in the classroom workshops engage children in songs, demonstrations, and roleplays in order to teach them how to recognize and understand abusive situations they might encounter with bullies, strangers, Internet predators, social media, and people they love and trust who might physically or sexually abuse them. Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence - Rural Communities Distance Learning Program The 20-Hour Advocate Certificate Program training gives basic knowledge from which to build expertise and experience of options available to battered individuals, understanding of the dynamics of battering, and a philosophy of empowerment. The Northern Nevada Literacy Council - Family Reading Program The Family Reading Program is a successful and unique inter-generational literacy project that began in 2015 and has grown to reach families across Northern Nevada through community building and collaborations. Sierra Nevada Journeys – Family STEM Nights Partnering together, Sierra Nevada Journeys (SNJ) and Desert Research Institute (DRI) will provide Family STEM Nights for K-6 students, their parents and siblings to experience a fun evening with interactive stations that reinforce STEM concepts learned in the classroom. Ridge House - Nutrition and Wellness Program The 6-week Rise and Grind Program at the Ridge House will further increase clients' chances for a successful recovery from substance use disorders and behavioral health issues.
