Celebrating In Concert
As we celebrate Independence Day may I suggest that in addition, we need a Dependence Day to remind us that we are connected to, and dependent on, each other to create the community we want to live in.
I love our community, but also, acknowledge our serious issues. The most vulnerable among us experience a harsher Truckee Meadows than I, but we are members the same community. We walk along the same river banks and cool off under the shade of the same trees. Each of us is responsible for stepping up, contributing however we can, and working together to meet these challenges. It feels good to think about the examples of cooperative, positive successes that surround us. One of the happiest and wide-spread community-enriching experiences Reno has to offer is Artown.
This 4th of July weekend, Artown begins offering music, cultural and art experiences the entire community can share freely. Patriotic music, Souza marches, jazz, and soul concerts are free and accessible to everybody at local parks and gathering spots. You can look up performances, times, and locations on artown.org. While most of the Artown offerings are free, they are not without cost. Please consider contributing to keep the festival open to everybody.
I look forward to this weekend as a high point of summer and a day full of patriotic significance and memories.Enjoy the community spirit and celebration with friends and neighbors – even if you don’t know their names. Happy 4th of July!
