AB60 Update
At the AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) spring training event this week there was discussion about the implementation of AB60, which is the bill passed last year that requires nonprofits operating in Nevada to say whether they are a charity or not. It was interesting to hear that we have 12,000 nonprofits. But the number of these nonprofits that are “charities,” meaning that your gift to them is deductible, is substantially less.
All nonprofits that solicit ( and there are many that do so that are not charities) must register by the end of this year so that you, the consumer, can check them out online to see whether your “gift” is deductible. One of the items that came up was the question of where to look up the nonprofit on the state website. Here is a link. But the link shows all corporations, for-profits and nonprofits, so you need to know the name used on the state website to find the business. https://nvsos.gov/sosentitysearch/corpsearch.aspx
So far this year about 500 nonprofits have completed their reporting to the State. The reporting is done on the annual filing date; so if we guess that this is a fourth of the nonprofits that will be reporting (because they intend to solicit gifts), we can surmise that about 2,000 of the nonprofits will solicit. Remember, not all of them will be considered charities.
If you are with a nonprofit and are concerned about this filing with the State, don’t be overly worried because it is pretty easy. The State has a new form they call the “Charitable Solicitation Registration Statement”. Here is a link to that form. It is pretty basic and should not take more than a few minutes to complete. There is no additional fee. http://nvsos.gov/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=2912
Here is another link that provides overall information on the new requirements. This can all be done online and, if you don’t mind the extra fee then you can just do that and skip the legal fees. http://nvsos.gov/index.aspx?page=1344#592
On another note, locally Rotary District 5190 and Wells Fargo are sponsoring a Business Ethics Forum on May 16. Looks like a great program, and strong ethics in business and life is certainly something I support. Here is a link in case you’d like to see more about that program. http://thisisreno.com/2014/04/rotary-district-5190-sponsors-business-ethics-forum/
