2018 Scholarship Applications are Open
It is that time again. From January through May, the Community Foundation receives a flood of scholarship applications from hard-working, college-bound student from all over Nevada. Truly, there is nothing I find more rewarding than making phone calls to these deserving students to notify them of their award. 2017 was a stellar year for our scholarship programs. We reviewed 425 applications and awarded a total of $398,959 to 173 recipients through 27 of our scholarship funds. With the addition of 3 new scholarship funds in 2018, the Community Foundation’s impact on education will only increase.
2018 scholarship online applications are now open.
We offer a broad range of scholarships: some are specifically for high school seniors in our area, some are for “non-traditional” students who are going back to school, some are for those continuing their education in the fields they practice in and already love, and some are for specific areas of interest. The age range for our scholarships goes from our preschoolers with applicants starting as young as 2.5 years old, all the way to those awardees attending the UNR School of Medicine. There’s no question that there is something for everyone! Check them all out on our scholarship page. Each scholarship fund offered by the Community Foundation has a person and a story behind it. Donors create scholarships to honor or in memory of a loved one, reward a particular type of academic or service effort, and/or to support students from a certain school - all as a way of giving back to their community. Additionally, one of the distinct advantages of working with a community foundation is our flexibility; donors can craft everything from the criteria of the scholarship, to the award type and amount, to the selection committee. Scholarship selection committees also play a vital role in the award process, and the job is not an easy one for these volunteers. Guided by the criteria the donor sets up, each selection committee reviews all eligible applications and makes award decisions. There are so many dedicated individuals who give freely of their time, energy, and expertise, helping students achieve their dreams – parents, siblings, family members, committee members, and donors. Knowing there are people out there that really take an interest and make an investment in these students’ future is truly inspiring!
